Poynton High School - Year 10 Parent Bulletin

Year Team Notices

Year 10 mock exams start on the 2nd May.Students will be informed in class which topics they should be revising in preparation.Departments will also be discussing effective revision techniques for their subject in lessons.

Revision Tips and further information can be found by following the year group Twitter account @PHS_Year10

Thank you for your support in ensuring that your child’s attendance is good, you will be aware that every lesson at this stage consists of material in which your child could be assessed, any lessons missed can have an impact on your child’s subject knowledge.

Maths

As you are aware, our Year 10 students will be sitting their end of year examinations w/c 1st May. To help prepare them for their Mathematics examinations, we believe there are two important strands to their revision to give them the best possible chance of success. Our hope is that we can share these with you and encourage you to engage with your son/daughter in this preparation, which will start over the Easter holidays for the end of year exam and be ongoing throughout year 11. We hope you find this format a non-intrusive way of supporting for yourselves.

1)         PiXL Maths App (little and often!): An online resource that can be downloaded onto phones, tablets, or used on a desktop PC through a web browser. This is designed to help the students with the fundamentals. They select a target grade and the app asks questions then provides a Red/Amber/Green feedback for each topic. We are encouraging the students to take an “It isn’t done until it is green” approach to this. The app has links to videos and slides to help understanding with each of the topics it tests. They (and you) can see their current score on a leaderboard, which will also show their position within the class through the app. You may wish to ask that they could “add 5 onto their score” when they have a spare 5 minutes, which they can then show you. The students were shown this in a recent assembly and should have received a flyer with comprehensive details on how to access and use this fantastic resource.

2)         Practice exam papers (focused revision): The students have been given access to these through Doddle, but we have currently only provided access to the mark schemes to parents (below). All we are asking of you is that once they have spent at least 1hr30 working through a paper, you give them the mark schemes and allow the students to mark these themselves. This, along with one of the fortnightly written homeworks and questions in class, is how we are helping prepare the students for the style of question they are likely to see in the GCSE. Remember we host weekly Supported Study drop in sessions on a Thursday lunchtime in room 10 for the students to seek help should they have any problems and need a maths teacher.

The students should all have received a slip detailing how they can order a combined revision guide/workbook through the school on ParentPay for £4.25. If orders are received by 31st March they should be in school when they return after Easter. Please select either Higher or Foundation tier. If they are not sure which one to order, please encourage them to ask their maths teacher.

Please find below links to practice papers and mark schemes to help aid them with their revision.

We fully acknowledge that these exam papers offer a significantly increased difficulty over the previous GCSE. Evidence from large scale trials suggests that students around the country are finding the new style of examination challenging. The overall difficulty of the paper essentially will not be important. What will matter is how our students perform compared to students of similar abilities around the country. The papers reward those students who approach their studies with a Growth Mindset, show perseverance with challenging questions, and explain their logic clearly when writing solutions. Through constructive use of these past papers and consistent use of the PixL Maths App the students will help to put themselves at the best advantage possible to prepare for the exam. We ask that you provide encouragement, and praise the hard work your son/daughter will be undertaking.

We are incredibly proud of our Year 10 students and the efforts they have put in to their Mathematics studies both inside and outside of lessons. We will continue to support them in their studies in every way possible and throughout Year 11 until the examination in the Summer.

Lessons are still being spent reading and studying ‘The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde’.  Please discuss this book with your child where possible.

Reading a wide range of non-fiction texts and analysing the language used will also support them prepare for their examination

It is vital that they engage with the Descriptive and Narrative GAPP pack (assigned to them in class and on Doddle) as it will be revising GCSE skills that were taught last year.

Students should complete fortnightly Doddle tasks in order to keep their technical writing skills up-to-date.

Art

The students are starting their next project on Portraits after the Easter holidays and so in preparation the students are to complete 4 drawings of eyes in different media (but not in pencil or oil pastel as we are completing these in lesson.) The drawings should be no bigger than A5.

I encourage them to draw from an image and not from memory as well as watching the Youtube video on “How To Draw A Realistic Eye: Narrated Step by Step”

This homework is due on Wednesday 19th April 2017.

Music

Each Year 10 pupil has been provided with an official AQA Listening Examination paper with an Audio CD. They must complete it over the Easter holiday  so that they will be more prepared for the mock exam in April.

They have also been given a CD Rom each which has the PowerPoints  that we have covered throughout Y10 for revision purposes. The PowerPoints cover the information needed to pass the exam, but more importantly, it saves the student searching for the audio material to go with it.   It’s all in one handy place for them.

The pupils should be working on an instrumental (or vocal) performance for their performance mock exam in April.  The pupil  must provide, ideally, the  sheet music or if not possible, the original track on cd.  Any backing tracks must be burnt to CD ready for the mock exam. The pupils have examples in their folders of recommended  sites on the internet for purchasing sheet music and backing tracks.

Business Studies

Students will sit their mock exam between 2nd-8th May

The mock exam will be 1 ½ hours long (final exam is 2 hours long)

Students should be revising for their mock exams in May.  The paper will be on the Medicine course which most groups have now completed.  Please speak to your class teacher for examination revision tips.

Product Design

The Product Design GCSE consists of 4 units:

Controlled Assessment

Year 10; Developing and Applying Design Skills (30% of final grade)

Year 11; Making, Testing and Marketing (30% of final grade)

Examinations

Innovation Challenge – practical exam based in the workshops – 6hrs plus a 30 minute reflection (20% of final grade)

Designing Influences – written/design exam – 1hr 30mins (20% of final grade)

The mock examination for the Innovation Challenge will always take place outside of the main examination times due to the length of it.

Therefore the dates for the mock ‘Innovation Challenge’ are:

Session 1: Monday 24th April; 9am-12.40pm (workshops)

Session 2: Tuesday 25th April; 9am-12.40pm (workshops)

Session 3 (reflection): Wednesday 26th April 9-9.30am (Hall)

The students have been given a variety of revision materials, including past papers and mark schemes, a task booklet about the theme of the ‘Designing Influences’ examination, an example of the ‘Innovation Challenge’ booklet one empty and one with comments added of the requirements of each section, plus a booklet of exam style questions on all topics which could be questioned upon.

I do hope your child makes full use of these extensive resources over the Easter period and is ready for their examinations upon return to school.

The students will be completing their ‘Developing and Applying Design Skills’ controlled assessment by May half term and will begin their ‘Making, Testing and Marketing controlled assessment in June, where they will be manufacturing a high quality product of their choice. We will be asking students to purchase their own materials for this as hopefully it will be an item they will want to take home and keep afterwards.

Thank you for your support.

Religious Education

The mock exam will be 1 hour and 45 minutes and students will need to revise all topics they have learnt so far (these can be found in their purple and yellow exercise books:

Christianity: worship and festivals

Christianity: key beliefs, Christ and salvation

Themes: crime and punishment

Christianity: role of the church in the local and wider community

Themes: relationships and families

Students should make sure they know the key concepts (see key terms pages they have for each topic) and know their Buddhist and Christian teachings thoroughly.

Computing

I strongly encourage Year 10 and 11 Computer Science students to watch the Online Videos:

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCsBxhDfwURg-vQASN2ZeHwg

These videos are 5 to 10 mins long and have really good subject content.

Also Computer programming club is on a Thursday 3:00 – 4:00 room 29 open for everyone.

Project work can be improved in school on a Wednesday 3:00 – 4:00 room 29 year 11 only.

Thank you for your ongoing support, if there is anything that you feel we should know in order to help your child further please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Kind Regards
