Poynton High School - Year 10 Parent Bulletin
Dear Parents and Carers.
Inside this bulletin, you will find key information from a number of departments which should enable us to work as an effective team supporting your child throughout their Year 10 studies.
Year team information:
- Thank you for your support in ensuring that your child’s attendance is good, you will be aware that every lesson at this stage consists of material in which your child could be assessed, any lessons missed can have an impact on your child’s subject knowledge.
- Parents Evening. As you are aware Year 10 Parents Evening is on Thursday 9th February from 4pm-7pm. Your child should be now actively making appointments with their subject teachers in class.
- Twitter. A great way to stay connected is through following the year group Twitter page @PHS_Year10 and also the school page @PoyntonHigh.
- Parental Profiling. As we continue to further develop our strategies to partner with our students’ parents and carers I would like to introduce a new initiative called “Parental Profiling”.
Parental Profiling @ PHS works by you expressing an interest in what you may like to be consulted upon, or what you would like to get involved in.When we are working on those areas, we will take a random sample of the people who have expressed an interest, and consult directly with them.This should allow us to get a greater amount of feedback and involvement in the exact areas that you are interested in rather than the often “generic” consultations that schools sometimes employ.Please use the following link to find out more:http://www.phs.cheshire.sch.uk/page/?title=Parental+Profiling+%40+PHS&pid=109
- Equipment. Students should have; black pens, pencils, a ruler, a pair of compasses, a scientific calculator, an eraser and a highlighter. In exams, this must be in a see-through pencil case. Most stationers sell exam packs with everything in them, we also have some equipment for sale in the school library.
Lessons are being spent reading and studying ‘The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde’. Please discuss this book with your child where possible.

It is vital that they engage with the Descriptive and Narrative GAPP pack (assigned to them in class and on Doddle) as it will be revising GCSE skills that were taught last year. Students should complete fortnightly Doddle tasks in order to keep their technical writing skills up-to-date.
The students will be completing an assessment in the w/c 30th Jan. this will be based on the topics that they have covered so far this year. Use your books for revision, you could also use MyMaths to help to prepare for this assessment.
The department runs a support class on Thursday lunchtime in room 11. This is an opportunity for students to get help with classwork or homework.
Product Design have just launched an inter-school competition with our year 10 design groups.
By the end of February, students are to design and create an upcycled product. This will be a product which includes any old item which would usually have been disposed of, to re-use it and repurpose it.
The competition was launched by an external provider in lesson on Friday 26th January. Students can work on this outside of school but use their product design teacher for support as and when needed.
Completed products will need bringing into school to be taken away for judging by March 8th at the latest.

In Year 10, we focus the formal assessment on specific tasks. All four skills are continually assessed in classwork and home learning tasks too. The topics will be specific to the ones taught in class and the grammatical difficulty will build up as students learn.
The grades students achieve will reflect this and will not necessarily be an overall grade for the year’s work but rather a snapshot of the particular topic studied at the time.
SPRING TERM: Reading and Translation (both ways) before February half-term
SUMMER TERM: Writing, Listening and Speaking
Each individual teacher will organise their own schedule and tell their students for each assessment.
Year 10 German, specific groups update
Mrs McGuire’s Group
We are still working hard on completing the syllabus. In addition to this students should be revising their cases and adjective endings as a particular focus for this half term. ‘Cases Club’ is on every Monday lunchtime, room 33 and any areas of concern can be discussed there.
Miss Takhi’s group
Miss Takhi is running ‘drop-in’ sessions for her year 10 German class every Thursday from 3.15-4.00 in room 48. Bring any work or questions you need help with. “There are no silly questions!”
A late bus is available to students who may need transport to get home. (£2.50, tickets to be purchased in advance)
For all German groups:
Students also have conversation booklets to complete and must make sure these are completed up to date to avoid being overwhelmed at the end of Year 11.
Reminder: Active Learn for Units 1 and 2, Memrise for all vocabulary and if you have bought a Grammar and Translation workbook, this should be used to support your work in class. If you have not bought one and you would like one please speak to Mrs McGuire who will pass on all the details.
The next end of unit test will be on Monday 6th February covering movement analysis and components of fitness
We will be running an extra revision session for this on Wednesday 1st February after school 3-4pm in room 7. All welcome!
As we are covering a topic which can be taught practically as well as theoretically, we ask all students to bring trainers for each lesson.
These groups are currently developing their final piece ideas for their first project.
Staff are looking forward to seeing how the work progresses.
For any students that fall behind with this coursework there are catch-up clubs that they will be expected to attend on the following days, 3 to 4.30pm:
- Mrs Oakes group will be held on Mondays.
- Mrs Guest & Mr George’s groups will be on Thursdays.
