Curriculum Ambition
At Poynton High School we believe that Business and Economics has something to offer each student. Students can opt to study a business course from KS4 and our curriculum has been designed to other pathways to all learners with traditional and vocational options. Many of our students go on to study Business/Economics or related fields at university or are accepted onto related Apprenticeships. It is our aim to prepare our students for the fast-paced global world of Business and Economics and equip them with the skills and knowledge to adapt to the challenges they will face. Through high quality teaching and learning our intent is that the Business and Economics curriculum will allow students to:
- Develop a deep understanding of Business and Economic concepts
- Find a course that suits their needs and allows them to achieve their potential
- Develop their numeracy and literacy skills through relevant subject content
- Regularly revisit and build upon their prior learning
- Apply their knowledge to a wide range of Business/Economic scenarios
- Confidently identify Business/Economic concepts in the media
- Accurately use a wide range of subject specific key terms
- Research using a wide range of sources
- Pitch their ideas confidently and coherently
- Accurately read, interpret and analyse a variety of different data sources and formulate valid conclusions
- Consider the ethical implications of Business and the moral and social obligations of different industries
- Understand the link between Business/Economics and other subjects such as Geography, Maths and Sociology.
The Business and Economics department at Poynton offers a wide range of courses at Key Stages 4 and 5.
Key Stage 4 (Year 10-11)
At Key Stage 4, we offer GCSE Business and CNAT Enterprise and Marketing. GCSE Business offers a more traditional approach compared to the vocational approach of the CNAT course. Both subjects are popular and attract students in increasing numbers.
GCSE Business (AQA)
The course is assessed fully through examination at the end of Year 11.

CNAT Enterprise and Marketing (OCR)
The CNAT course is made up of three components: two internally assessed (60%) and one that’s externally assessed (40%).

- R065 Design a Business proposal (Coursework 25%)
- R066 Market and pitch a business proposal (coursework 25%)

Key Stage 5 (Sixth Form)
At Key Stage 5 students can choose to follow courses in Business and/or Economics. These subjects are very popular in the 6th Form.
A level Business (Eduqas)
Students are assessed through three examination papers.

BTEC Extended Certificate in Business (Pearson)
Students at Key Stage 5 work towards the BTEC National Extended Certificate in Business, completing two internally assessed units (controlled assessment) alongside two externally assessed units (examinations).
Students will study:
- Unit 1 Exploring Business (coursework)
- Unit 2 Developing a marketing campaign (exam)
- Unit 3 Personal and Business Finance (exam)
- Unit 4 Recruitment and selection process (coursework)

Economics A Level (AQA)
Learners will study the content areas below:
- Scarcity and choice
- Demand and supply in product markets
- Demand and supply in labour markets
- Resource allocation
- Costs, revenues and profits
- Market structures
- Market failure.
The course enables learners to develop an in-depth understanding of the role markets play and the way in which governments seek to manage them.

Each subject offers particular challenges and skills which are useful both for entry into the world of work, and for University entry. At A level a combination of subjects may be taken from the three subjects we offer. Many of our students go on to take business related subjects at University.
We also offer the students the opportunity to reinforce their learning with extracurricular activities and event. Visits to London and the Bank of England, Cadburys World and Alton Towers are regular events. We also encourage the students to get involved in competitions and Business Conferences.
The department is heavily involved with the Career Ready programme with many Business and Economics students applying to join this exciting and enriching option. It opens up a wide range of opportunities, support and experiences. Students who are successfully selected to join the Career Ready programme benefit from guest speaker workshops, business visits, a 4 week business internship and access to a business mentor.
