Year 11 Parent and Carer Bulletin – April 2017

Notices from Year Team:

On Wednesday 29th March all Year 11 students were given their own personalised exam timetables.They should have these to share with you.The whole GCSE timetable can be found here:

A great way to stay connected is through following the year group Twitter page @PHS_Year11 and also the school page @PoyntonHigh.  We have been tweeting revision tips over the last few weeks.

Students should have; black pens, pencils, a ruler, a pair of compasses, a scientific calculator, an eraser and a highlighter.  In exams, this must be in a see-through pencil case.  Most stationers sell exam packs with everything in them, we also have some equipment for sale in the school library.

The Easter break is a really important time for revision.  Each department will have set specific tasks for students to be revising.  If your child states that they have nothing to do then please contact school as work will have been set.  Students received a blank revision timetable on 7th March in assembly, by now they should have a timetable that they are sticking to daily.

 

English

When students arrive back after the Easter break, all English lessons will be revision lessons.  We will be revising a range of content from Year 9, 10 and 11 for both English Literature and Language.

Students have been provided an Easter revision log that must be completed and signed by students and parents/guardians.  We have recommended that a minimum of 12 hours is completed for the two English GCSEs: Language and Literature.  Please encourage your child to complete this as much as possible to keep them motivated throughout the 17 day break.

There will be specific revision tasks posted on Twitter every other day.  Please follow us, or encourage your child to, so that they can access these materials on a regular basis: @PHS_EngDept.  Doddle has a wide range of useful tasks and mini-quizzes that students could complete as part of their revision timetable.

Every student has paid for their own copies of the GCSE texts (‘Macbeth’, ‘Jekyll and Hyde’ and ‘An Inspector Calls’).  It would be beneficial for students to re-read these texts with the assistance of BBC Bitesize or Mr Bruff on Youtube.

Supported Study will continue to run every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday in Room 23.

Mathematics

The GCSE examinations in Mathematics commence from May and we are now in the final stages of preparation with our students. They will receive a detailed feedback from their last mock including a RAG analysis of topics when they return after the Easter holidays. Through the homework section of the PiXL Maths App, they will also have a personalised learning plan they can access and use which will be unique to each student. In class, we will be focussing on the class areas of weakness from these papers.

Important information:

The examination consists of 3 papers each of length 1hr30mins

Dates for the papers: Thursday 25th May, Thursday 8th June, Tuesday 13th June

Students will need to bring a black pen, pencil, calculator, ruler, rubber, protractor, and a compass for each paper and to all lessons leading up to this.

Students should continue to prepare for these examinations using the practice and mock papers we have provided, the PiXL Maths App, their revision guides, and Doddle. The Mathematics department are offering supported study sessions on Thursday lunchtimes, and Year 11 specific sessions run every week 2 Wednesday 3:00-4:00. Students should sign up for these on the noticeboard next to Mrs Toby’s office by the Friday of the previous week and places are limited.

Revision Log (Maths and English)

All students have been provided with a revision learning log for Maths and English. This will be used for the students to detail the amount and type of revision they have completed over the Easter holiday. We are asking if you could take an active role in this process by “signing off” the work they have completed as you did over February half term. This will be checked by all Maths and English teachers during the first week back. Both subjects are expecting that the students complete a minimum of 8 hours work for each subject. Contact home will be made if it is clear that your son/daughter has gone above and beyond the recommended amount to celebrate this success, or if they have fallen short of this expectation.

 

Music

Each pupil has been given an official AQA Listening Examination paper with an Audio CD. They must complete it over the Easter holiday.  They should have by now, transferred from the school network to their own USB pen drive, the revision videos I have produced.  They cover the AQA  keywords including videos and audio.

They have all received a pupil pack which includes 100 differentiated listening tasks which the pupils can complete during their own revision timetable.  The audio is located on YouTube using the links provided on each worksheet.

 

Business Studies

Y11 WJEC GCSE Business

All 3 groups have now either completed the course or are close to completion

Class time after the Easter break will focus on revision, past paper questions and examination technique

Students will be informed of targeted intervention sessions - these will be recorded in their planners and sent to you via SIMs InTouch

 

GCSE format: 75% exam / 25% controlled assessment (coursework)

Final exam date: Friday 9th June @ 1 pm

Exam format: 2 hours written exam, 100 marks (students must bring their own calculator)

Seven units in total (6 exam units + 1 piece of controlled assessment)

Questions are a combination of multiple choice, short response and longer essay style questions (worth up to 10 marks)

This group have almost completed the course – small amount of unit 5 to complete

They have been the set a revision pack that checks their knowledge – they must write 3 short answers to 20 questions in each of the 6 units that they have covered

It is expected that this task will take 2-3 hours to complete

This must be handed in completed on the first lesson after the Easter break

 

Group 11D (Mr Huteson)

This group have completed the course

They have been set a pack of past paper questions on unit 5 – the external environment

It is expected that this will take 2-3 hours to complete

This group have completed the course

They have been the set a revision pack that checks their knowledge – they must write 3 short answers to 20 questions in each of the 6 units that they have covered

Y11 BTEC Business

A catch-up session will be run in school on Monday 3rd April for all students who wish to improve their controlled assessment work (9am – 12pm)

Students who have significant gaps in their work have been informed and are expected to attend – this will be recorded in their planner

There is a small number of students who have indicated that they wish to re-sit their Unit 2 Finance exam – they should use the Easter break to revise for this

 

History

Students should now be finishing their final topics on the History of ‘Medicine and Treatment’ (Paper 1- 5th June) and ‘The Development of Surgery’ (Paper 3- 20th June).  You also need to revise ‘The American West’ topic from Year 10 (14th June). 

Revision during the Easter holiday is essential.  Please speak to your History teacher for revision activities and access to past papers.

There are past papers for Medicine and American West assigned to Doddle for all the Year 11 History students.  There is also a 2015 paper with some exam tips added.  This is specifically for Mr Dean’s group to answer (the revision instructions are on the back) but it will be useful for all to look at. 

Revision guides have been sold by the History department.  If students would like one now but didn’t buy one before thay are available to buy on commercial websites.  The book is REVISE Edexcel GCSE History B Schools History Project Revision Guide by Kirsty Davies (ISBN-139781292097138)

 

Product Design

We are putting on the following revision sessions which you can attend to increase your knowledge of each topic ready for your two examinations.

Innovation Challenge Examination: 8th and 9th May – 9-12.30, 10th May 9-9.30

Designing Influences Examination: 26th June

For each session, we will expect you to come prepared with an understanding of the topic. We will start with a discussion followed by an in depth look at the topic and what it may mean in the exam, including practise questions.

Each session will last for 1 hour – 3.10 – 4.10pm in room 53

Weekly Tuesday Topics are:

21st March: Colour theory, Aesthetics, Ergonomics and Anthropometrics

Colour Theory: A working understanding of the importance of colour; colour in terms of perception and psychology, colour wheel, complementary colours and contrast.

Aesthetics: Shape, form, line, symmetry, proportion, balance, sensory factors, taste, smell and touch.

Ergonomics and Anthropometrics: The interaction between people and the products they use; human size and its influence on designing; the application of anthropometric data to solve practical problems in the made world.

 

30th March: Social, moral and cultural issues including globalisation of design and manufacturing

Social, Moral and Cultural Issues: Ethical designs, socially responsible designs and the impact of different cultures on modern products such as Indian batik work, Islamic patterns and the differing meaning of colours within different cultures; lifestyle changes, e.g. the development of ready meals and the social and ethical implications of fashion and obsolescence; the responsibility of designers to adopt sustainable designs. Consideration of people with disabilities.

Globalisation of Design Manufacturing: The social, moral and technological impact of the globalisation of design and manufacturing on manufacturers and consumers.

 

20th April (Thursday): Sustainability and the environment

Sustainable Technologies: The basic principles of sustainable technology, reuseable, recyclable, carbon reduced and carbon neutral products, e.g. sustainable forests, rechargeable batteries, renewable energy supplies, natural oils from plants as an alternative to fossil fuels.

Sustainable Design Imperatives and Design Tools: Designing products in a way that reduces environmental impact by the use of renewable resources; the use of sustainable design tools such as life-cycle assessment and life-cycle energy analysis to judge the environmental impact or ‘greenness’ of various design choices.

 

25th April: economics of manufacturing and the use of CAD/CAM and automation

Economies of Manufacturing: Understanding the principle of the different scales of production, e.g. one-off and batch; recognising the benefits of economies of scale when applied to common manufacturing processes; recognising the importance of sustainable manufacturing and the impact that manufacturing has on the environment.

CAD/CAM: The advantages of CAD/CAM systems to manufacturers and consumers; understanding of common computer-aided manufacturing devices, e.g. laser cutters, printers.

 

2nd May: Systems, structures and scientific principles in products

Systems and Structures: Natural and mechanical structures; simple mechanical and electrical systems.

Scientific Principles: The importance of scientific principles in common products such as levers, and mechanisms on bicycles; the reduction of friction through the aerodynamic design of cars; understanding how modern scientific principles and new materials have influenced the design of products.

 

9th May: Marketing, advertising and consumer law

Marketing and Advertising: Understanding how research is used by companies to identify target markets for their products, e.g. ranking and rating tests, consumer surveys; knowing that advertising is part of a marketing strategy.

Consumer Law: In so far as laws impact upon the design of products and innovation; basic understanding of the terms ‘copyright’, ‘registered design’, ‘patents’ and ‘trademarks’ as they apply to the design of products; understanding that legislation exists to provide consumers with protection, e.g. labelling, product literature.

 

16th May: Energy and Health and safety

Energy: Sources of energy including both renewable and non-renewable sources; energy from food; energy generated by burning fuel; batteries; impact of energy use on the environment; new forms of sustainable energy sources, e.g. biofuel, hybrid technology.

Health and Safety: How products are designed to ensure consumers’ health and safety; the role of the British Standards Institute and the Food Standards Agency in quality-assuring products; ways of preventing injury to users on common products, e.g. the use of lead-free and non-toxic paint on children’s toys, the avoidance of finger traps, guards on electrical tools, the lion stamp on eggs.

 

23rd May: Design potential and the impact of new and emerging technologies

Recognising that new materials and technologies create design opportunities, e.g. smart materials used in medical procedures, such as nano technology, microencapsulated dressings; the use of new techniques in food, e.g. ultralow blanching that increases the firmness of canned vegetables and maintains their shelf-life; in graphics, the use of biodegradable and recyclable materials, smart pigments and luminescent inks and new materials, e.g. super-elastic spectacles.

 

Religious Education

Teachers have now completed teaching the course and so all students are completing revision activities in lessons.   Teachers will distribute to students A4 size work books (purple and yellow for each exam) so that students can be working on these over the Easter holidays.

Computing

I strongly encourage Year 11 Computer Science students to watch the Online Videos:

These videos are 5 to 10 mins long and have really good subject content.

Also Computer programming club is on a Thursday 3:00 – 4:00 room 29 open for everyone.

Project work can be improved in school on a Wednesday 3:00 – 4:00 room 29 year 11 only.

Computer Science Revision books will be issued to year 11 for use over Easter.

 

Geography

Unit 1: Physical Geography which will be the topics of, Restless Earth, Rivers and Coasts.

Unit 2: Human Geography which is the topics of, Population, Globalisation and Tourism.

Students must ensure that they revise case studies for all of the topics.

Please mention Doddle to your child as individual staff have been setting tasks for over the Easter break.
