Poynton High School - Parent and Carer Bulletin

Year 11 Parent and Carer Bulletin February 2018

English

  • Year 11 have just completed their Speaking and Listening GCSE assessments, which consist of a prepared speech on ‘An issue that concerns me’.
  • Pupils will be received a PiXL Smith Proforma in their English lessons on Monday 22nd January which is based on their mock from October. This will remind them where their areas for development are for the Language GCSE and should be used to guide their revision.
  • All classes are now moving on to study ‘Macbeth’. There are some fantastic revision guides available to support with their revision here:

  • Every fortnight Year 11 pupils are set their Revise Five questions and a reading task on Doddle that should support them with their revision of both English Language and English Literature.
  • Most students are starting to purchase and prepare folders with dividers that help them organise their revision.  We will soon provide them with booklets of mock questions for each section of the four exams.
  • To support their Literature GCSE students should be starting to re-read their texts - An Inspector Calls, Jekyll and Hyde, and all of the 15 Power & Conflict poems from the AQA Anthology.
  • Drop in supported study sessions for English are on Tuesdays in room 23 at 3.00.

Mathematics

The next maths mock exams will take place on the 12th, 13th and 14th of February.  Students will be preparing for these in class.

A fantastic resources for revision is the PiXL Maths App for revision. If you want to check your young person is working on this, ask them to show you their “score”. This should be increasing over time. Their username and password is the same as for Doddle, and the school ID is PY4438. If they are still struggling to access this, they should see network support.

Science (double and triple students)

March Paper 2 mocks

Your child has recently completed Science mock exams which assessed the Paper 1 content of the course. Students will sit the second set of Science mocks which will examine the Paper 2 content of the course:

Biology paper 2 mock  - Friday 9th March

Chemistry & Physics paper 2 mocks – Wednesday 14th March (on Student Development Day)

To help students prepare for these exams the Science department is running a series of revision activities and sessions (see below).

Targeted revision sessions

Those students who achieved significantly below their guidance grades in the recent mock exams will be invited to attend compulsory Science revision sessions after school. You will receive an email if your child has been invited to these sessions. These will start on  Tuesday 5th February and will run every Tuesday after school from 3:00-4:00 in upper School Science. There will be separate targeted sessions for double and triple Science students. Below is the timetable for targeted sessions for each subject.

Drop-in revision sessions

In addition to the targeted revision sessions, drop-in revision sessions will also run every Tuesday after school from 3:00-4:00. These are open to all double and triple Science students who have not been invited to the targeted sessions but would like some extra support from teachers. There will be separate drop-in sessions for students doing double and triple Science.

Science Six

All double and triple Science students have been set independent revision tasks to complete. These are known as Science Six and are set on Doddle every week one Monday and students have two weeks to complete them. These tasks are designed to help students break up their revision into manageable chunks to help prepare them for their exams.

Subject teachers will also set sample past paper questions to complete for homework

Music

Over the next few weeks it’s vital that the Year 11 GCSE Music students frequently visit the department to develop their coursework - compositions and performances. On Friday 20th of April (the last deadline) the students hand in two recordings which show them performing to the very best standard possible; one solo and one ensemble performance, along with two compositions.

The department is open at lunchtime and after school for pupils to further develop their work. There is plenty opportunity for pupils to receive “one to one” tuition from all three Music teachers from January through to April. Students must book this via the teachers in advance.

It is essential that the students regularly listen to the set studies (both audio and analysis) so that they are ready for the listening examination. Study notes have been provided for revision purposes and students must revise this thoroughly.  Now is the time to brush up on basic theory skills in preparation for the examination. There is a weekly theory clinic for pupils to attend when and if they need help.

Religious Studies

Students are now on the final stretch of their RS studies.  They are currently learning about Buddhism worship, festival and ethics, this will take them to approximately February half term.    Between February half term and Easter they wil study their final thematic topic - Religion, peace and conflict.    Dependending on timetable, we anticipate students will have approximately 10 revision lessons in school with their RS teachers.   Just before February half term they will be issued with an A5 revision guide for Component 1 The Study of Religons, Belliefs, Teachings and Practices.   These are issued free to students and are a valuable summary of all the teaching notes/resources used in school.   Alongside this, they will be given an A4 student work book which will contain a range of revision activities for them to complete.     Similar materials for the Component 2 exam will be issued to students before the Easter break.

If you would like to purchase other revision materials, there are two very good books available on Amazon, see the links below.

These sessions will give students the opportunity to bring in their own geography revision to work on independently. Members of the Geography Team will be available to support students through any particular topics they may be struggling with, exam technique etc.
