Poynton High School – Year 10 Parent and Carer Bulletin
Dear Parents/Carers of Year 10 students,
We have been really impressed with the fantastic start that the year group has made to their GCSE and BTEC studies. We are keen to ensure that we fully support our young people to get the most out of their subjects. Please find below some key information from subjects which may help you support your child further.
Students have completed Power and Conflict Poetry Cluster One and are moving onto the second cluster from their anthologies.
They will complete their first unseen assessment just before Christmas based on their exploration of poetry throughout the whole term. There are some fantastic revision guides to support their revision of these poems found here:
After Christmas, they will be returning to their GCSE Language studies with a view to completing the mock exam on English Language Paper 2, which is focused on their understanding and crafting of non-fiction writing.
To support their Literature studies they could re-watch ‘An Inspector Calls’.
All students should now be completing a descriptive and narrative GAPP Pack due in after Christmas so please support them with this task.
- Our next assessment is on 16th November. Sets 1 and 2 will be sitting a calculator paper, sets 3,4,5 will be sitting a non-calculator. Revision/topic lists have been allocated to all students through Doddle.
- The GCSE Exam board we are using is AQA.
- Revision guides: We will be completing a bulk order for revision guides around Easter. If however, any students want to order the recommended guide before this, then these are the links on Amazon:

How can I help my child with their Science?
- All students are set homework tasks on a regular basis. In addition to supporting your son or daughter with this work, there are other ways that you can help your child to succeed in Science.
- If they have purchased a revision guide or workbook, encourage them to use these on a regular basis to support the work that they are covering in lessons.
- Students will be set revision tasks through Doddle by their teacher in preparation for tests or to go over work covered in class. Please make sure they check their Doddle task list on a regular basis and complete the tasks that have been set. Doddle can be found at www.doddlelearn.co.uk and all students have individual logins.
- Use the Science GCSE bitesize revision website http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/gcsebitesize/science/aqa
- Use the My GCSE Science revision website http://www.my-gcsescience.com/ which has tutorials for all the topics covered in all 3 sciences.
As these are all new GCSE courses new revision materials have just been produced. We recommend the new CGP revision guides. Double students can purchase a combined science revision guide and Triple students will need to purchase 3 individual subject revision guides for Biology, Chemistry and Physics. These can be ordered through school at a reduced cost. Letters will be sent out via sims in-touch.

We are in the last month of an incredibly full rehearsal schedule for those in Fiddler on the Roof. Many of our year 10 students are in leading roles and are doing superbly. They will be working every Saturday until the show. Well done for their commitment and dedication and good luck for the show.
Coming up for Year 10 drama students is a play on 23rd January. Splendid Theatre Company who are experts in the style of Brechtian theatre and they are performing Metamorphosis. All students can use this both to inspire their practical work and write about it in an exam and is mandatory for all Drama GCSE students. Cost of £6.00 a ticket and anyone is welcome.
At the end of January, there is the opportunity for Year 10 students to go for the drama weekend at the Menai Centre for a fantastic weekend of working with actors, directors and designers. All students interested should see their class teacher or Mr Halliwell.
In Year 10, we focus the formal assessment on specific tasks. All four skills are continually assessed in classwork and home learning tasks too. The topics assessed will be specific to the ones taught in class and the grammatical difficulty will build up as students learn.
The grades students achieve will reflect this and will not necessarily be an overall grade for the year’s work but rather a snapshot of the particular topic studied at the time.
AUTUMN TERM: Listening and Reading (in class) on current topic
SPRING TERM: Reading, Writing and Translation (both ways) on all topics done so far
SUMMER TERM: Listening, Reading, Writing (during Yr10 exams period – 30th April – 4th May) and Speaking (later in the term)
Each individual teacher will organise their own schedule and tell their students for each assessment.
